About us

Our mission

“We believe in Family Medicine & organize projects to strengthen it.”

This core belief is the foundation of this initiative, the reason why we do what we do. We are convinced that Family Medicine is the backbone of a strong healthcare system and simply a beautiful profession which deserves and needs to be supported. We also believe that connecting new, digital technologies with creative, dedicated individuals can make a real difference. We try to think out of the box in order to offer GPs / Family Physicians from all over the world exciting new ways of learning and of developing further.

Both, me (Florian Stigler) and this initiative, are not funded by an industry (like pharmaceutical industry or any other). Also, we will not accept such industry funding at anytime in future. Why not? Firstly, because I see industry funded medical education as a significant problem which needs to be solved rather than reinforced. Secondly, because I want this initiative to stay trustworthy (my content is based on my personal, medical and scientific viewpoint, not on industry interests).

As the founder of this initiative, I would like to tell you a bit more about myself and about my experiences in strengthening family medicine (more on LinkedIn).

In medical school, at first, I wanted to become a pediatrician. Then, I found my passions for family medicine and for organising projects (by serving IFMSA as Director of Public Health).

After graduation, I decided to become a GP (being trained in Austria) and I also wanted to learn more about public health and research (attaining my MPH in Manchester and DrPH in London). My research focused, among other issues, on preventing a GP shortage, on reforming family medicine in Austria and globally, the quality of diabetes care and obesity management, and on preventive medicine (comments in Lancet and NEJM). Alongside, I served in the board of the Young GPs of Austria.

Now, I work part-time clinically as a GP in Graz/Austria (with focus on preventive medicine) and part-time for the National Public Health Institute (to support the Austrian family medicine reform). I also founded the Global Forum on Universal Health Coverage & Primary Health Care (~600 leading experts from 80 countries).

The Golden Nuggets are identified by a structured search strategy. This includes a regular screening of relevant scientific Journals, publications of Family Medicine Associations, and medical articles published elsewhere. Additional sources are classical Family Medicine textbooks, articles and publications. These potential Golden Nuggets are completed by suggestions from the Advisory Board, acquainted international GPs and from readers themselves.

The draft Golden Nuggets are written by the editor (Florian Stigler), reviewed by the Advisory Board, amended and published in their final version by the editor. We shall assume no liability for any kind of errors or harms.

If you want to suggest us a Golden Nugget – an exciting piece of information – just tell us by replying to one of our emails or by using our contact form.

The Blog Posts are, unless stated otherwise, written by Florian Stigler. Of course they contain different sources (like peer-reviewed publications or quotes from experts) which are cited accordingly.

Guest posts by other authors are welcome! Please just contact us.

This initiative was founded by Florian Stigler. He or this initiative in general did not receive any industry funding. Also in future, it will not accept any industry funding (e.g. from the pharmaceutical industry or any other).
